Chapter 14, A New House

I have a list for you. I gave him the five names. Before I could even ask a question he named the Oxford Hall Academy.

"As what?"

"Absolutely the BEST school on the list. In fact the best school in the state. The others are good, very good, but Oxford is the best. Kind of pricy though."

"What's pricy?"

"Tuition and books, starts at $35,000 a year, more if you want boarding school."

"How do I get my son in?"

"You'll need help, my help, specifically."

"How can I make this happen?"

"I'll get the ball rolling for you. As Chairman of their Board I have a certain degree of pull. But it will all be up to your son. He'll have to take the tests and pass the interviews."

I went back to the real estate files and threw out everything but the houses near Oxford Hall.

I studied the homes that Trudi felt would suit the majority of my requirements I had given her. Several were very nice and I narrowed the selection to three. I called Trudi and told her which ones I wanted to see. She said she would set up a day to go see them all.

I called Jenifer. "I think you need a week off work"

"I can't afford a week off. My mortgage payment is due at the end of the month and they like full payments."

"But you CAN afford it. I want to get together tomorrow and I'll explain everything. Plus I want to go over our lists of what we both want for our wedding. Remember put down everything you want like price is no object. Can I take you to lunch?

Well, ok, but if I get fired, you're making my mortgage payment.

"Yes, dear," I said in my most obedient voice.

I picked her up just before noon and headed to Los Angeles airport, I pulled into the parking lot of the Proud Bird. The maître d' escorted us to the corner table overlooking the airplanes parked outside and the runways of LAX.

Our waitress brought water to the table and asked for our drink order. I asked for a margarita and Jenifer wanted a Mai Tai.

She returned moments later with our drinks and said, "I understand this is to be a working lunch and you may be here a couple hours, so I won't be bothering you too much. If you need me, set your water glass out by the edge of the table and I'll come right over. Before I go, can I get you anything for now?

"Yes, which are your two most popular appetizers?"

"That would be the Crab Stuffed Mushrooms and the Bacon & Bleu Cheese Dip served with a variety of dipping companions."

"We'll have one of each of each please."

"I'll go put that order in for you. Enjoy your lunch."

I took Jenifer's hand and held it tight. "Where do I start? I haven't lied to you, well maybe a little. But I definitely haven't told you the whole truth either. Mostly it's about Donny.

"You cannot repeat this information it might endanger your life, or Donny's if you do.

"After our trip to Natural Arches in June, Donny's mother came to visit me. It seems her father and grandfather is the head of the largest and most powerful crime family in China. They have influence into the highest levels of the Chinese government. She had been hiding in the US for the last 15 years. They had been looking for her and finally found her that same weekend we were in Natural Arches. She was forced to go back to China. Donny couldn't go because he isn't Chinese enough."

"Our waitress arrived with our appetizers and dropped off two menus. "Whenever you're ready to order let me know, no hurry."

"They threatened his life if she did not come alone. They agreed to allow him to live if she could find someone who would take him and raise him without ever telling him about where his real mother is.

"The whole situation was handled by the Washington, DC Chinese embassy. They did all the forging of the documentation and replacing the originals with their fakes. They faked Miss. Chen's death and flew her back to China. They faked Social Services paperwork even forging my signature. They added my name as the father on his birth certificate. And they even had an insider fix his Social Security file by changing his name.

"I, of course, have no proof of this, but I will offer you one piece of evidence. I handed her the envelope the Consular Officer gave me." She opened it and peeked inside and just stared. "That's $50,000 to do whatever I want with it.

"But that's not all, they told me there was a small life insurance policy and they filed a claim against it on my behalf as I was the beneficiary. A couple weeks later, I got a check from a Chinese insurance company for 15 million dollars. That's the money that bought the Natural Arches house.

"Are you hungry? Let's order lunch." I picked up my menu, but Jenifer just continued to stare at me.

"Are you kidding me? You are. This is some kind of a joke."

"No, I'm serious. I swear it on a stack of bibles."

"She's not dead?"

"No, and we can never tell Donny. If he were to show up looking for her, he would be killed. She wants him to believe she died instead of abandoning him."

"Oh my god."

I handed her a menu and we both looked for something to eat.

When we decided, I moved my glass to the edge of the table. The waitress appeared and Jenifer ordered the Chinese Chicken Salad and I had the lunch Filet Mignon, along with a couple more drinks.

"Do you know how bright Donny really is?"

"You mean the kid that didn't know what a penis was 3 months ago?"

"Yes, that one."

"I don't know how smart he is, but I know he catches on very quickly."

"Yes he does. He has received straight A's on every report card his entire life. He plays on-line computer games that are based on High School trigonometry and wins!

His mom taught him to stay under the radar so they wouldn't be found, so he never pushed back on his teachers for more challenging work. I'm going to get him into Oxford Hall Academy."

"Ooh, that's a very good school. I've heard of it and it's very expensive."

"Yeah, it's $35,000 a year for tuition. I want to move to be near the school so he can stay home with us. Would you mind quitting your job?"

Our lunch orders arrived and we concentrated on eating for a few minutes.

The waitress came back carrying a phone and plugged it in near the table, "You have a call Mr. McKinney, a Miss. Trudi."

"Oh thank you, I'm expecting it."

"Hello Trudi... The food here is delicious, I'm having lunch with Jenifer, and what did you find out? ... Oh, great. We'll meet you at the Seaside address at 10 tomorrow... Yes, I believe all four of us will be there. OK, see you then. Bye.

"We have an appointment at 10 AM tomorrow in Laguna Beach. Want to go house hunting?"

"Man, you do move fast."

"Well I want to be moved in before school starts.

We finished our main course and our dishes were cleared. While waiting on our desert selections, I asked, "So what's on your wedding list?"

She pulled a folded piece of paper from her purse and we exchanged lists. Jenifer's list was:

Nothing elaborate, just a few friends
Outdoor wedding
No wedding gown or veil, just a nice dress
Hair and makeup perfect.
Live music
No formal dinner – just finger foods
No girl's night
Karen as my Bride's Maid
3-teir wedding cake
No one telling us what to do or when to do it.
No invitations – phone calls
I want to be part of the whole wedding
(and one other thing)

I slowly read over her list "OK, what's this one other thing?"

"It's not something I have to have, more of a fantasy really. It's ok if you don't want it, oh, never mind, forget it, it was silly."

"No there's something there. What is it?"

"Well with all our time at Natural Arches being nude together. I was thinking that maybe, well, that we could do the ceremony, you know, nude."

I smiled and told her to open my list.

Watch you walk down the aisle in a beautiful dress.
Not to cry as you walk the aisle.
A nude ceremony
Donny and Karen as part of the ceremony
No church
No bachelor party.
Write our own vows
Chili & cheese nachos
Open bar

She finished reading looked up at me and said, "I love you so much."

"So did we already agree on Pastor Jim? Or did you have someone else in mind?

"No, he's perfect, we'll just have to ask him. Do you think he would let us marry naked in his church?"

"I don't think the Pope would approve."

"You know he's not catholic."

"What about holding it at Natural Arches, Saturday Sept 4th, Labor Day weekend, the park is the most full. We'll invite everyone to attend."

We talked another hour about details. How she and I would mingle with the guests as they arrived, her favorite finger foods, how and when we would change from her dress and my tux to nude for the ceremony, what time we wanted the ceremony, etc.

When we had agreed on many of the details, I told her, "We don't have much time to pull this off and we're going to be getting ready to move also. I don't want this to be too stressful for you, do you trust me, honey? I've gotten pretty good at making things happen quickly in the last month. I'll make this happen and all you have to do is show up in your dress with you hair and makeup done."

She leaned over, kissed me, and said "I trust you, I know you will."

We left the restaurant and headed back to Los Altos. I picked up Donny when I dropped her off and went home. I began making phone calls.

I called Roy at Natural Arches. "Roy, how would you like to have the biggest party that Natural Arches has ever seen?" I told him about the wedding and reception and that everyone in the park would be invited. I asked how many would be there that weekend.

"At the rate of our bookings, I'd say about 300."

"I'll need the recreation center and the area we'll marry in Saturday morning. The decorator will have to work around everyone while decorating the pool area. Don't worry Roy, I'll work out everything. Are there any wedding planners that have worked at Natural Arches before?"

"Yes." He gave me the name. "And she's very good too, did a couple of nice weddings here."

I called Loraine the wedding planner. Told her the date, location and set a planning appointment for Friday right after lunch at Natural Arches.

Wednesday morning, Donny and I collected Jenifer and Karen for the trip to Laguna Beach. On the drive down the coast, we filled them in on the wedding plans, and that we wanted them as part of the ceremony as Bride's Maid and Best Man. I also let everyone know that I had an appointment with the wedding planner Friday afternoon in Riverside, so Donny and I would be going to Natural Arches for the weekend again. "Mom, can we go too?" Karen demanded.

"Sure Honey, we can go this weekend too."

"What do I have to do as Best Man at the wedding?"

"Not that much, stand with me in front of the pastor, make sure I don't pass out, hand me the wedding ring when called for.

"Do I have to wear a tux like you?"

"Well it would look very nice if you did."

He sat back and folded his arms, obviously upset at having to wear clothes at Natural Arches. I then told them that during the actual ceremony Jenifer and I would be nude while exchanging vows.

"Do I get to take if off when you do?"

You know, after your great proposal to Karen, what would you two think about completing the brother/sister union with your own set of vows? You could both be nude at that point." They both loved it and want to do it.

We pulled up in front of the house where we were to meet Trudi. There were several work trucks and men everywhere taking care of detail work and cleaning up. Inside there was still some painting going on.

I warned Donny, that this house only had a small pool as we walked in. The front was open and Trudi lead us in the entry and straight through and out onto the patio which stretched across the entire width of the house. Donny looked at the hot tub and said, "That's not a pool," obviously disappointed. I explained that was a hot tub and we would see the pool shortly. Back inside, everywhere you looked were floor to ceiling glass walls with magnificent ocean views. The home was built on a rock outcropping that stuck out into the Pacific Ocean with cliffs on three sides and surrounded by water. There were only two other houses on the street, and the view into the pool area was discretely blocked by a wall giving the pool and the rest of the house absolute privacy.

We spent an hour going through the 4,800 sq. ft. 5 bedrooms, 5.5 bathrooms, living room, dining room, family room, kitchen, breakfast room, theater, garage, office, laundry, play room and finally the 3-level patio, pool, and separate maid's quarters with an additional bedroom, bath, living room, and kitchen/dinette. Everything was beautiful, even the furniture that was being brought in to stage the house for its grand open house this Saturday. What we did notice, was there was no outdoor space other than the patio and pool which was covered with a wood patio cover, there was no grass anywhere or even any place for it. Every square inch of rock was covered with building. The only plants were in large pots. Opening price Saturday was going to be $1,345,000.

Finally it was time to move on and we drove inland and up into the hills above Laguna Beach. We followed a ridge line up till it ended in a cul-de-sac. There was only one home, but empty lots for a few others.

8,315 sq. ft. 6 bedrooms, 6.5 baths, it had huge rooms a good size pool and a Jacuzzi, and all the other amenities the first house had.

It wasn't on the beach, but stayed cool with a constant ocean breeze coming up the slope. The view was tremendous, overlooking the city of Laguna Beach and you could see all the way up to Newport. It had a couple trees and a couple grassy areas. Construction on this one ended 6 months ago, but no offers had come in. Trudi was sure we could get it under the asking price of $999,900. The downside was the commute to Oxford Hall was much longer.

We discussed the two homes in the car, comparing the good vs. the bad. Donny liked all the space and the nicer pool in the hilltop home, but liked the windows, the view and the beach at Seaside. Karen said Hilltop was Ok, but there were no other kids around and didn't like the higher inland temperature even with the breeze, she declared it no contest that Seaside was better with the beach right there, lots of kids would be around and the ocean. Jen liked the outdoor space and the kitchen, but it was just so BIG! "What are we going to do with all that space? Seaside just fits us better."

"Which one do you prefer Dad? Karen asked."

"Doesn't matter a whole lot what I think, I just want all of you to be happy."

"Typical of a Dad, Jenifer sighed.

I flashed my lights at Trudi up ahead of us and she pulled over. I got out and walked to her window. "Let's find some place for lunch. I think we've made our decision. She found a restaurant and we went in and sat down.

We explained our thinking and our reasoning, and she just nodded. When I stopped talking, she said, "If you didn't by it, I was going to. It's a fantastic home, perfect size, above the beach, it couldn't be a better home or an investment.

She called the last appointment and cancelled. She sat back down. "How do we do this? I asked.

"I'll need a deposit, and we'll need to get you qualified for the loan. We'll have to estimate closing costs and fold everything into the escrow. I opened my checkbook and wrote out a check for $1,400,000 and handed it to her. "Will this cover everything? "How soon can escrow close? We want to move in next week if possible."

Jenifer piped up, "And you can stop the staging furniture. I have an interior designer friend who will help us do much better than that cheap crap."

I looked at her with a questioning look on my face. "Oh, you don't know him. He's Frederick or just Fredo. He's going to help us.

Trudi made another call, this time to the developer telling him the news. "Only conditions of escrow will be final inspection, independent inspection, and final walkthrough."

She came back to the table with a big smile, "You've bought yourself a home. Escrow may take a week longer to close just because of the title search and other paperwork, but he said you can move in Monday. He'll meet us there Monday at 10 for the final walkthrough. I'll get escrow started this afternoon. Could you stick around for a few hours, I'm sure we'll need your signature. You can kill some time at the Laguna Sawdust festival. And arrive in an hour or so?"

"Sounds good to me." Trudi paid the bill due to the generous commission she was about to receive for maybe 10 or 12 hours of work. We headed to the festival. And hour and a half later we arrived at the Escrow office. We met the builder, signed lots of paperwork and headed back to Los Altos.

Jenifer spoke up, I think my plans for the weekend just changed. I'll need to start working with the Fredo and buying furniture for the new house. Tomorrow I'll call my old boss and put in my retirement paperwork, Not that I'll get anything, it just sounds better than telling him I quit. Karen Honey, we can't go with the boys to Natural Arches this weekend.

Karen argued to please allow her to go with us. "Well I can't go but if Aaron's willing to take you, you can go with them."

Karen grabbed my shoulder, "Please Daddy? Please, can I go?

She had me at Daddy. "Ok, you twisted my arm, you can come along."

"Is that one of the double meaning words?"

"What are you talking about?"

"You know, come along?"

"Karen! No, how could you say that?" Actually it was, it was just unintentional.

"Hey Dad, after we were move into the new house," Donny asked, "Can we still be nudists?"

I replied, "Of course, as long as you want to be one."

"Cool."
